Chapitre 5 Étape 3 Le passé composé avec avoir
In talking about the past, you can describe what things were like, or you can tell what happened.
The passé composé is a compound tense formed with two elements: an auxiliary, or helping, verb + a past participle. Most French verbs use the auxiliary verb avoir. Although it is used to form a past-tense verb, the auxiliary verb is conjugated in the present tense.
parler
j'ai parlé
tu as parlé
il/elle/on a parlé
nous avons parlé
vous avez parlé
ils/elles ont parlé
Most past participles are regular and are formed from the infinitive as follows:
infinitive past participle ending past participle
parler -er é parlé
finir -ir i fini
vendre -re u vendu
Ils ont quitté le Viêt-nam. They left Vietnam.
Ils ont choisi d'habiter Lyon. The chose to live in Lyon.
Ils ont vendu leur maison. They sold their house.
Often, irregular verbs have irregular past participles.
avoir eu j'ai eu
être été j'ai été
faire fait j'ai fait
prendre pris j'ai pris
apprendre appris j'ai appris
comprendre compris j'ai compris
Ils ont fait le voyage. They took the trip.
Ses parents ont eu de la chance. His parents had good luck (were lucky).
The past participle of -rir verbs ends in -ert:
ouvrir ouvert j'ai ouvert
découvrir découvert j'ai découvert
offrir offert j'ai offert
Il a ouvert son magasin. He opened his own shop.
The passé composé has several equivalent in English, depending on the context:
Le père de Noc Phuen a ouvert un magasin. Noc Phuen's father opened a store.
Noc Phuen n'a pas habité le Viêt-nam, il a toujours habité Lyon. Noc Phuen did not live in Vietnam, has has always lived in Lyon.
To make a verb in the passé composé negative, you place the two parts of the negative (ne + pas) around the auxiliary verb.
entendre
je n'ai pas entendu
tu n'as pas entendu
il/elle/on n'a pas entendu
nous n'avons pas entendu
vous n'avez pas entendu
ils/elles n'ont pas entendu
To ask a question in the passé composé, use either est-ce que or inversion. Note that the inversion occurs between the pronoun subject and the auxiliary verb:
Est-ce que j'ai fini?
As-tu fini?
A-t-il/A-t-elle fini?
Avons-nous fini?
Avez-vous fini?
Ont-ils/Ont-elles fini?
Note that short, common adverbs (bien/mal, toujours/souvent, beaucoup/peu/assez) are placed between the auxiliary and the past participles:
Il a toujours habité Lyon.
However, adverbs of time (aujourd'hui/hier) and place (ici/là) are placed at the beginning or end of the sentence:
Nous avons grandi ici. We grew up right here.
Ils ont vendu la maison hier. They sold their house yesterday.
